Carnivorous plants

Cobra Lily Darlingtonia californica

Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea)
Many tribes of the Great Lakes region used this plant as a cure for smallpox. The use of the root offered some immunity and shortened the course of the disease.

SARAPIN from Sarracenia purpurea is currently being used for neuromuscular or neuralgic pain.

Traditionally, Sarracenia species were used in a poultice against smallpox. The root was used to furnish the greatest cure against smallpox lesions.

Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula)
When an insect lands inside a trap, the fine hair inside the trap is stimulated and the plant will close around the insect. It won’t open again for several days until the insect is completely digested. After three leave closings, the trap leaf will turn black and wither.

Sundew (Drosera)
The sundew has “tentacles” with sticky dew drop on the ends that attact insects. These tentacles then wrap around the insect-victim, and they begin to digest (via enzymes) the food.

Hindu medicine used Drosera burmannii as a rubifacient.

The astrologer-herbalist, Nicholas Culpeper, said that Drosera anglica was ruled by the sun under the sign of Cancer. The juice destroys purulent lesions, warts and corns, if a little of the juice was applied to the same.

Drosera rotundifolia is found in herbal cough medicines.

Pinguicula species were used in Nordic countries to curdle milk.

Nepenthes ampullaria was used to make rope in Indonesia. Nepenthes is the largest of all of the carnivorous plants, the largest species growing in Indonesia and Borneo. It has been reported that small tree frogs, reptiles and birds have also fallen victim to these carnivorous plants.

Byblis species from australia has been used as a sweetener.

Plant Curiosities

Indian Pipe (Monotropa uniflora) The root of this plant was considered a good remedy for seizures in children. The powdered root was administered for restlessness, pain, fever, gonorrhea, ulceration of the mucous membranes of the bladder, intermittent, recurring fevers.

The Indian Pipe does not have the usual green color associated with plants, instead it is white and found growing on the decaying leaves and other dead material found on a forest floor. It has been found that the Indian Pipe forms a connection via an underground fungus to a plant that is forming its own chlorophyll, which it then takes from the green plant.

Rafflesia is the world’s largest flower, with a single flower being nearly three feet across. This flower grows in the jungles of Sumatra.

My Gardening Tips

Keep the plants moist, using a covered planter or terrarium. These plants need a moist, even boggy, environment. Light should be diffused. They can be feed every two weeks using 20-20-20 plant food diluting to 1/4 strength. These plants are most compatible with most ferns and mosses.

Herbal Therapeutics: The Nervous System

The Nervous System is the primary interface between the physical body and the greater consciousness of the Universe. The Nervous System is our link to our environment. It has three basic functions: to receive, to interpret and to respond to stimuli. This is one of the most important systems of our body. It is what provides integration and coordination to our lives. It allows us to see, feel, touch, act and react and create. Without this system there would be no life. To the degree that it is impaired, the quality, tone, color, and richness of life are diminished. Therefore, keeping our Nervous System healthy is necessary for a full rich life.
Herbs and natural therapies play a vital role in the health and wellness of the Nervous System. It is bio-chemically acknowledged that contained within the make-up of plants are chemical substances that seem to have no apparent function for the life of the herb. These chemicals however, have a direct positive influence on the human body. In treating nervous system disorders, one has the opportunity to see “holistic medicine” in action. Not only does one treat the physical body when working with this system but the psychological and spiritual realms as well: we are able to witness the interaction between body, mind and spirit in healing.
There are several classifications of herbal nervines, some stimulate and energize the system by gently arousing life energy, other nervines may aid in sleep and relaxation.
Nervine herbs like Oat Straw, Skullcap, Chamomile and Hops, tone and rehabilitate the nervous system. Sedative nervines, such as Lemon Balm, Passion Flower and St. Johns Wort, aid in sleep, ease tension and can reduce pain. Nervine demulcents sooth and heal irritated and inflamed nerve endings. Flax Seed, Comfrey and Slippery Elm help with inflammation.
Herbal Nervines are an excellent compliment to traditional medicine and can often help with side affects of many medications.
In order to maintain a healthy Nervous System it is important to have balance in nutrition and diet, get plenty of exercise, and learn how to rest and relax. Connect with nature during times of stress. Have frequent massages and most of all learn to like yourself !!

Herbs and Herbal products come in many different forms !

Whole Herbs: plant or plant parts that are dried and then either cut or powered.
Teas: Come in either loose herb or in teabag form, when seeped in boiled water for a few minutes, the fragrant aromatic flavor and the herbs medicinal properties are released. As a general rule most teas are consumed for three reason: 1) as alternatives to caffeinated tea or coffee. 2) as a component to a meal strictly for the flavor (peppermint, spearmint, rose-hips, lemon grass, anise); 3) for their mild medicinal effects (peppermint and chamomile for upset stomach or to improve digestion, chamomile or hops as a nighttime sleep aid or insomnia remedy, cinnamon tea as a home remedy for diarrhea)
Capsules & Tablets: These offer consumer convenience but are not as effect due to processing.
Extracts & Tinctures: They are high concentration of herbs qucikly assimulated compared to capsules and almost always contain alcohol. The alcohol is used for 2 reasons: 1) is an excellent solvent to extract herbal properties 2) acts as a preservative.
Essential Oils: EO’s are usually distilled from various parts of medicinal and aromatic plants, and highly concentrated, with one or two drops often constituting adequate dosage. They must be used sparingly and carefully when taken internally. Some also cannot be applied directly to the skin as they may irritate. Always consult a professional.
Salves, Balms & Ointments: For thousands of years, humans have used plants to treat skin irritations, wounds, insect and snake bites. In pre-historic times, herbs were cooked in a vat of goose or bear fat, lard or some vegetabel oils and then cooled in order to makes salves, balms and ointments. Today a number of products, made with vegetable or petroleum jelly, are sold in the united states and Europe to treat a variety of conditions. These products often contain the following herbs: aloe, marigold, chamomile, ST. John’s Wort, comfrey and goldenseal

How to make an Herb Tea

Loose teas are usually steeped in hot water: three to five minutes for leaves and flowers (this method is called infusion) or fifteen to twenty minutes in a rolling boil for denser materials like root and bark (called decoction).

Infusions: the simplest method of preparing an herb tea and both fresh or dried her may be used, such as peppermint, chamomile, and rosehips. Due to higher water content of the fresh herb, three parts fresh herb replace one part of the dried herb.
-Put one teaspoon of herb or herb mixture into a teapot, add boiling water and steep for 5 minutes covered.

Decoctions: For hard and woody herbs such as ginger root, and cinnamon bark for example, it is best to make a decoction rather than an infusion, to ensure that the soluble contents of the herb actually reach the water.
-Put one teaspoon of dried herb or three teaspoonfuls of fresh material for each cup of water in a pot or saucepan. Add the appropriate amount of water to the herbs and bring to a boil and simmer for ten to fifteen minutes.

The word herb as used in herbal medicine, means a plant or plant part that is used to make medicine, food flavors (spices), or aromatic oils for soaps and fragrances. An herb herb can be a leaf, a flower, a stem, a seed, a root, a fruit, bark or any other plant part used for its medicine, food flavoring or fragrant property.

“There are an estimated 250,000 to 500,00 plants on the earth today ( the number varies depending on whether subspecies are included) Only about 5,000 of these plants have been extensively studied for their medicinal applications,

Consider that 121 prescription drugs come from only ninety species of plants and that 74 % of these were discovered following up native folklore claims, one would think there may be more jackpots out there”

In general herbal medicines work in much the same way as do conventional pharmaceutical drugs, i.e., via chemical makeup. They contain a large number of naturally occurring chemicals that have biological activity.

Herbal Medicine has most to offer when used to facilitate healing in chronic ongoing problems. By skillful selection of herbs for the patient , a profound transformation in health can be effected with less danger of side effects inherent in drug based medicine

The Healing Art of Herbalism

has grown out of millions of personal healing experiences over centuries before the advent of medical technology. Herbal remedies that resulted in cures were recognized, remembered and gradually categorized by the great schools of herbal healing. They were recorded by Egyptian medicine, Indian Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese Kampo: the teachings of Hippocrates: and the native healing systems of Africa, Australia and the America’s.
At a time when Traditional medicine has made some of the greatest advances, herbs once again are becoming popular among the developed world. Striving to stay healthy in the face of chronic stress, population, and the re-emergence of infectious disease, more and more people are taking charge of their health with herbs. The special gift that herbal medicine offers is the restoration of control to the individual. Herbs can and should be used with conventional medicine, providing just the right amount of help for the body to regain its balance after an assault by disease.
Herbal Medicine has an ageless ability to improve the condition of the whole person and can be wisely used to help anyone achieve a better state of health.

CO-Q1O

Actions and Benefits – Is an enzyme with vitamin like antioxidant properties that may be more powerful than vitamin E. Levels of Coenzyme Q 10 decrease with age and should be supplemented. It plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of the immune system and the aging process. All cells have it, but it is concentrated in the heart muscle. Studies have shown a drop in Co-QIO has caused diseases to flourish. It is essential in the production of energy in every cell in the body. Increases tissue oxygenation. Has been used as treatment for heart disease and high blood pressure. Has benefits to help with the following problems; allergies, asthma, respiratory disease, aging, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, obesity, periodontal disease and candidiasis. May help with mental functions like Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. Research is being done to see what benefits it may have for AIDS and cancer. Can possibly help reduce side effects of cancer chemotherapy.
DIMENHYDRINATE

Actions and Benefits – Dimenhydrinate is a antihistamine. It has a history of helping with the nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness. May reduce excess stimulation of histamine production within the inner ear. Large doses may cause unpleasant side effects including drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness and fatigue.
DHEA
(Dehydro-Epiandrosterone)

Actions and Benefits – DHEA or Dehydro-Epiandrosterone is a steroid hormone produced in high amounts by the adrenal gland. It is considered the mother of hormones by researchers because it is the precursor of the manufacturing of many other hormones. It is the most abundant steroid in the blood stream. The body produces less DHEA as we age and needs to be supplemented. Can help retard and possibly reverse some of the effects of aging. Helps enhance the immune system. Helps reduce the risks of heart disease. May help stop the effects of carcinogens and reduce the risks of cancer. Aids to promote lean muscle tissue. May increase bone density, reversing effects of osteoporosis. May help normalize blood sugar levels Helpful for stress and depression. Also helps with multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
GLA

Actions and Benefits – Gamma linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid. Must be supplemented. A lack of GLA may lead to a dysfunctional level of prostaglandins. Helps prevent hardening of the arteries, heart disease, premenstrual syndrome, multiple sclerosis and high blood pressure. Aids in lowering cholesterol.

GLUCOSOMINE

Actions and Benefits – A substance classified as an amino sugar which is not used as a source of energy, however it is incorporated into the structure of body tissues. Is involved in the formation of tendons, bones, ligaments, skin, eyes, nails and heart valves. Can helpful for arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, asthma, candidiasis, food allergies, osteoporosis, and various skin ailments.

GLUCOSOMINE SULFATE (K-Salt)

Actions and Benefits – Is involved in the formation of tendons, bones, ligaments, skin, eyes, nails and heart valves. Can be helpful for arthritis.

L-ARGININE

Actions and Benefits – It is important for muscle metabolism, by helping to maintain a proper balance of nitrogen. Aids in weight loss because it helps facilitate reduction of body fat and increasing muscle tissue. Can help in building new bone and tendon cells, thus it may be good for arthritis and connective tissue disorders. Helps enhance the immune functions, thus benefiting those suffering with diseases that effect the immune system.

L-CARNITINE

Actions and Benefits – Helps transport long-chain fatty acids. Vegetarians are more likely to be deficient in carnitine due to a diet low in lysine. By helping prevent fatty build-up, it aids in weight loss and decreases risk of heart disease. Can improve athletic ability. Enhances the effectiveness of antioxidants E & C.
L-CYSTEINE

Actions and Benefits – A sulfur-containing amino acid. Aids in the production of collagen and promotes the proper elasticity and texture of the skin. Helps to detoxify harmful toxins and protect the body from radiation damage. Works best with selenium and vitamin E to aid as a free radical scavenger. Helps protect the liver and brain from damage caused from alcohol, drugs, and toxic compounds in cigarette smoke. Supplementation is recommended in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, hardening of the arteries, and mutogenic disorders such as cancer. Helps promote healing after surgery and severe bums. Binds with soluble iron, aiding in iron absorption. Can help promote healing from respiratory disorders because of its ability to breakdown mucus. Has an important role in the activity of white blood cells, which fight disease.
CAUTIONS: People who have diabetes should use caution, is capable of inactivating insulin. People with cystinuria, a rare genetic condition that leads to the formation of cystine kidney stones, should not take cysteine.

L-GLYCINE

Actions and Benefits – Retards muscle degeneration. Essential for central nervous system function and healthy prostate. Is needed by the immune system to produce the nonessential amino acids. Has inhibitory actions that help prevent epilepsy. Has been used to treat bipolar depression. Proper balance of this amino acid produces more energy. Too much can displace glucose and cause fatigue.
L-ISOLEUCINE

Actions and Benefits – Needed for formation of hemoglobin. It is metabolized in muscle tissue. Should be taken with the correct balance of leucine and valine, Helps regulate blood sugar and energy levels. Deficiency can lead to symptoms similar to those of hypoglycemia-.
L-LEUCINE

Actions and Benefits – Should be taken in balance with isoleucine and valine- Should be taken in moderation, or hypoglycemia may result.

L-LYSINE

Actions and Benefits – Essential building block for all protein. Aids in production of antibodies, hormones, and enzymes. Aids in production of collagen and repair of tissues. Needed for proper growth and bone development in children. Aids in absorption of calcium and helps maintain nitrogen balance in adults. Aids in fighting viruses like cold sores and Herpes. Important for those recovering from surgery and sports injuries. Lowers high serum triglycerides. Deficiencies result in loss of energy, inability to concentrate, irritability, anemia, retarded growth and reproduction disorders, hair loss, blood shot eyes.
L-METHIONINE
Actions and Benefits - Is not produced by the body and must be obtained from food or supplements. Assists in breakdown of fats, preventing build-up of fat in the liver and arteries. Because the body uses L-Methionine to derive a brain food called choline, it would be wise to supplement the diet with choline or lecithin (which is high in choline) so that the supply of L-Methionine is not depleted. Is important in the treatment of rheumatic fever and toxemia during pregnancy. Aids in the digestive system. Interacts with other substances to detoxify. Aids with muscle weakness. Helps to prevent brittle hair. Is beneficial for allergic chemical sensitivities and osteoporosis. Production of cysteine and taurine by the body may rely on the presence of methionine.
L-PHENYLALANINE

Actions and Benefits – Used to produce neurotransmitters. Needed by the brain to manufacture norepineplhrine. Can help elevate moods, enabling an individual to overcome depression. Can decrease pain from migraines, menstrual problems, and arthritis. Can also aid with memory, learning and obesity.
L-THREONINE

Actions and Benefits – Helps maintain protein balance. Is important in the formation of collagen and elastin. Is present in the heart, central nervous system, and skeletal muscle. Helps to control epileptic seizures. Aids liver and lipotropic function when combined with L-aspartic acid and L-methionine.
L-VALINE

Actions and Benefits – For better muscle metabolism, tissue repair, and nitrogen balance, use valine with leucine and isoleucine. Has an effect of being a stimulant. Deficiency results in a negative hydrogen balance of the body.
LECITHIN

Actions and Benefits – Is a type of lipid that is needed by every cell in the human body. Cell membranes, which regulate the passage of nutrients into and out of the cells, are largely composed of lecithin. The protective sheaths surrounding the brain are composed of lecithin. Although it is a lipid it is also partly water soluble and acts as an emulsifying agent. It consists mostly of the B vitamin choline and also contains linoleic acid and inositol. Helps to prevent arteriosclerosis, protects against cardiovascular disease, improves brain function. Helps promote energy. Is needed to help repair liver damage caused by alcoholism. It enables fats, such as cholesterol and other lipids, to be dispersed in water and removed from the body; this enables the vitals organs and arteries to be protected from fatty buildup PMS, Lady Mate,
LINOLEIC ACID

Benefits – Helps with a glossy coat & skin elasticity
MELATONIN

Actions and Benefits – Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone whose primary function is to promote sleep. Middle age adults (45) secrete only half as much as children and at age 80 production slows down to a trickle. It helps correct the disordered circadian rhythms of jet lag and shift work. Helps with mood swings. Melatonin also has very good antioxidant properties Melatonin OMEGA 3 & OMEGA 6 Actions and Benefits Not all fats are bad. Some are good. The difference is in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Omega 3 and 6 are considered as essential fatty acids (EFA’s). The body can not produce these, they have to be supplemented. Components of these two are EPA (eicosapentanoic) and DHA (docosahexanoic) acids, these two have the ability to reduce cholesterol and tryglycerides, the harmful fats. Heat destroys essential fatty acids and can actually change and create harmful free radicals. Every living cell needs EFA’s. Fatty acids are an essential player for good cardiovascular health. Helps reduce blood pressure. Are required by the body as a nutrient, however most of the population is deficient in them. Dr. Rudin says “In more ways than one, they’re our nutritional missing link.’ Improves skin and hair, aids in prevention of arthritis, reduces risk of blood clot formation Beneficial for candidiasis, eczema, and psoriasis. High concentrations are found in the brain, EFA’s aid in transmission of nerve impulses. A deficiency can lead to impaired ability to learn and recall information.
PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE

Actions and Benefits – Is the major phospholipid in the brain. Helps maintain integrity and fluidity of cell membranes. Low levels of phosphatidylserine in the brain have been associated with impaired mental function and depression especially in the elderly. Studies show that it may help improve memory and age-related brain changes. May help with senility, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.
SPIRULINA

Actions and Benefits – Recognized as the most promising of all microalgae. Is being considered as an immediate food resource. It produces twenty times the amount of protein as that of soybeans on an equal land area. Contains nutrients, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and high amounts of B12, high iron content, 60-70 percent protein content, essential amino acids, RNA and DNA nucleic acids, chlorophyll, and blue pigment (phycocyanin) found only in blue green algae, which may help with fighting cancer.
